Surgery for the sinuses is known as Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
Why might sinusitis & nasal polyps recur after surgery?
If the purpose of surgery is simply to remove polyps and "drain pus", this does not treat the underlying inflammation affecting the lining the sinuses.
With time, the swelling recurs and polyps develop again. (see left)
How do we perform surgery that sets the patient up for success?
The surgical procedure (FESS) must create the widest possible access to the sinuses. This allows saline wash +/- topical anti-inflammatory medications to reach the lining and prevent inflammation.
The same patient underwent revision FESS.
Surgery was done elsewhere before but has now been done again.
With regular nasal saline and topical corticosteroid treatment, access to the sinuses is wide and there is no inflammation of the sinus lining (see right)
